Cross-cutting training programme for PhD students at the University of the Balearic Islands

The cross-cutting training activities proposed will have specific assessment procedures based on objective tests. As a general rule, the supervisor or tutor shall be responsible for incoporating the assessment or successful completion into the PhD activities document.

Attending Lectures or Seminars Given by Experts in the Field

Description
The different departments collaborating on the PhD programme organise fortnightly research seminars given by renowned international researchers on topics linked to the programme's research areas. Students must attend at least 80% of the seminars.

Mandatory.
Format
Face-to-face.
Language of instruction
Most seminars will be in English.
Schedule
The seminars are organised on a fortnightly basis throughout the academic year.
Assessment Procedure
The activity will be included in the doctorand activities document (DAD) with an attendance certificate. The thesis supervisor and, on an annual basis, the monitoring committee for the PhD programme will review the activity.
Mobility Activities
Where students are highly motivated to attend a seminar given at another centre, their travel expenses may be covered if they are part of a research group.

Attending PhD Working Groups

Description
Many national and international scientific organisations working on business management and economics organise this type of activity from time to time. Students will be encouraged to take part, provided their thesis supervisor approves.

Face-to-face/blended/online, depending on the organised activity.

Throughout the programme, especially in the early years.

Mobility Activities
Where students are highly motivated by a PhD working group at another centre, their travel expenses may be covered if they are part of a research group.

Writing and Submitting a Research Article to a High-impact Journal

Description
As a general rule, PhD theses will comprise three research articles to be submitted to high-impact journals.
Doctorands must produce one article per year which will either be presented at the Demo June Workshop at the Autònoma University of Barcelona, or at the International Business Economics Workshop in September at the University of the Balearic Islands. Articles are expected to be presented at other conferences. The first article may feasibly be submitted to a high-impact journal in the last year of the PhD programme.

Schedule
Annual monitoring through presenting an article in June (Barcelona) or September (Palma). The pre-viva event in the last year of the PhD programme is held several months before the PhD viva voce.
Assessment Procedure
All PhD theses will go through a pre-viva. Three renowned international researchers in the thesis topic will endorse the plausibility for publication of the articles comprising the PhD thesis at the event. The thesis viva will not be held until the members confirm said plausibility.
Mobility Activities
Several activities lead to articles being produced, such as research stays at other centres, attending PhD working groups, giving seminars, etc. The mobility opportunities for these activities are set out in the corresponding sections.

Research Stays at Public or Private Centres in Spain or Overseas

Description
Doctorands will be encouraged to undertake a three-month stay at overseas research centres. This will depend on the available mobility grants they may apply for. Stays are a requirement for students to be awarded the International PhD Mention.

Format
Face-to-face. Alternative remote (online) 'stays' will be accepted in exceptional circumstances (such as a pandemic) where programme member universities endorse their validity.

Schedule
The activity may reasonably be undertaken from the third year on the PhD programme.

Research stay certificate.
Mobility Activities
Students will be encouraged to apply for the relevant mobility grants.

Presenting a Research Project Seminar

Description
The different departments collaborating on the PhD programme organise fortnightly presentations on work in its preliminary stages. Students may take part in them if they so wish.

Face-to-face. The activity may be held online in exceptional circumstances (such as a pandemic).
Language of instruction
English.
Schedule
Doctorands are advised to present a seminar when they are beginning each of the three chapters in their PhD thesis.
Assessment Procedure
Seminars will be publicly announced in advance to all department members, who are invited to attend.
Mobility Activities
Where students are highly motivated to give a seminar at another centre, their travel expenses may be covered if they are part of a research group.

Participating in Summer Schools

Description
Certain universities and scientific and academic organisations run specialised courses in summer. Doctorand participation in a summer school will be considered and depend on any possible funding they may apply for.

Participating in Internal Research Group/Departmental Seminars

Description
Doctorands are required to present their thesis progress on an annual basis and they are expected to produce one article per year. These presentations are held in two annual workshops. Doctorands are required to take part in one of the workshops either by presenting their work or discussing the work of others. Lecturers from the PhD programme and guest lecturers from other, mainly overseas, universities attend these workshops to comment on the work presented to attendees.
The workshops are held in June (Demo June Workshop) at the Autònoma University of Barcelona (every three years at the Public University of Navarre) and in September (International Business Economics Workshop) at the University of the Balearic Islands.

The departments involved in the PhD programme have agreed not to hire any recent graduates from the programme. This means doctorands must take part in recruitment activities at other universities.
The activity is a must for doctorands who wish to undertake an academic career.

Before any submission, it is extremely useful to get feedback from experts at different conferences and congresses. Once they have written their first chapter (during their first year, more or less), doctorands are advised to present it at specialised events where future examiners or potential journal editors will be in attendance.

Description
Teaching will be done by doctorands with funding whose grant includes the possibility of collaborating in teaching duties. It may be undertaken during the grant term. Doctorands are advised to undertake this activity for subsequent consideration at the job market events.

Doctorands will be included in the departmental teaching plan where they teach classes. Their duties will be registered in the relevant university records.
