The duration for PhD studies

The duration for full-time studies is a maximum of three years, starting from admission of the PhD student onto the programme until submission of the doctoral thesis.
This period may be extended for a maximum of two years. The first shall be known as renewal year and the second, exceptional extension shall be known as the write-up year.

The duration for part-time studies is a maximum of five years, staring from admission of the PhD student onto the programme until submission of the doctoral thesis.
This period may be extended for a maximum of three years. The first and second shall be known as renewal years and the third, exception extension shall be known as the write-up year.

The duration of PhD programmes is regulated in Article 3.2 of RD 99/2011 of 28th January that governs official doctoral programmes, and articles 3 and 4 of Regulatory Agreement 13084 of 10th April 2019 that approves the Regulations on the Organisation of University PhD programmes at the University of the Balearic Islands.

Rejoining the PhD Programme

  • When does it need to be requested?
    After the temporary leave, sick leave, etc. is finished.
  • This is an online procedure via the application: <https://postgrau.uib.es>.
  • Once your reincorporation is approved, you will need to contact the admin services at the EDUIB to formalise registration.
