Interdisciplinary and specific educational activities

Doctorands must take a minimum of 150 training hours. They must take at least 60 hours of cross-cutting activities. The remainder shall be for specific activities. This regulation also applies to part-time students.

Cross-cutting training programme for PhD students at the University of the Balearic Islands

The cross-cutting training activities proposed will have specific assessment procedures based on objective tests. As a general rule, the supervisor or tutor shall be responsible for incoporating the assessment or successful completion into the PhD activities document.

Specific Activities

Lectures by experts in the field
Objective
Attending lectures or seminars by experts in the field.
Hours
10 hours.
Format
Mandatory

Schedule
Lectures run every two months throughout the academic year. Full- and part-time students may do this activity throughout their time on the programme.
Assessment Procedure
Lectures shall be assessed by accrediting attendance and submitting an assignment on the conference content linked to students’ research topic. This will entail a critical analysis of the activity content and any possible impact this may have for students’ research to be supervised by the thesis supervisor(s).
General supervisory procedures: the doctorand activities document shall be assessed once a year. In addition, and prior to the authorisation for the viva voce examination, the Academic Committee for the PhD Programme shall verify that the minimum number of hours required for each mandatory subject in the programme have been completed.

Attendance at courses (seminars, tutorials, summer schools, etc.) or conferences that are useful for students’ training, as determined by the academic committee.

Students must attend at least 45 hours to be included in the doctorand activities document. Three hours per day will be counted for conference attendance.

Articles in high-impact journals
Objective
Publishing at least one article in English in a high-impact journal where doctorands are the first author, prior to the viva.
Hours
10 hours.
Up to ten hours shall be counted for each article, up to a maximum of 30 hours.

Doctorands shall submit a copy of the original article, alongside a report on the research impact. This will be supervised by the thesis supervisor(s).

Research stays at other national and international institutions.

160 hours.
Where students wish to be awarded an International Mention, the number of hours must be at least 480 since mentions require a minimum three-month stay.

Schedule
This activity shall be undertaken during the last years of the programme, both for full-time students (in their second and third year) and part-time students whose external responsibilities enable them to take a leave of absence (in their third, fourth and fifth year).
Assessment Procedure
he stay shall be authorised by the academic committee. After completion, a report on the stay shall be submitted by the host researcher or, failing that, by the thesis supervisor, and confirmed by the academic committee. The report shall include all relevant details about the stay (dates, host group, activities undertaken) and be incorporated into the doctorand activities document.
Mobility
The programme shall promote the activity being undertaken under the framework of mobility programmes organised by bodies or public administrations open to doctorands, or through specific agreements established with other institutions, organisations or businesses.
Moreover, research projects in each research group generally have funds to bolster mobility for students in their groups.
