The PhD in History, Art History and Geography comprises training at the highest academic level within these disciplines. It is geared towards preparing graduates to conduct top-notch theoretical and applied research, enabling them to tackle and solve problems, and make original contributions that extend knowledge in these areas.
The teaching and research units behind the programme are the Department of History and Theory of Art and the Department of Geography at the University of the Balearic Islands. The combination of these three disciplines allows for a better use of resources whilst favouring an interdisciplinary perspective without any of these disciplines losing their respective autonomy. Doctorands will be able to adapt and align their PhD thesis research profile in accordance with what is set out in the programme research areas.
The programme is structured around three research areas linked to several areas of knowledge: General History (Pre-history, Ancient History, Mediaeval History, Modern History and Contemporary History), History of Art (History of Art, Aesthetics and Art Theories), Geography (Human Geography, Physical Geography and Regional Geographical Analysis).
Although producing a PhD thesis is the main activity on the programme, students will also have to take supplementary cross-cutting and specific activities aimed at rounding out their training. The cross-cutting activities are organised by the UIB Doctoral School. In turn, the programme coordination team is responsible for the specific training activities. These involve attendance and participation at research seminars, preparing papers for conferences, congresses or PhD workshops and producing scientific articles linked to the thesis for publication in journals or books. Students may request the activities they undertake at other research centres be recognised. The programme also encourages the optional mobility of doctorands. This includes current Erasmus agreements, research stays at other national or overseas centres, and the awarding of the International Mention for the programme.
What skills will you acquire?
Students on the PhD in History, Art History and Geography will specialise in and learn how to undertake top-quality research on the topic they select from one of the areas on the programme. Therefore, the programme aims to provide students with a systematic and critical understanding of a field of study and to enable them to master the relevant skills and research methodologies to be applied in producing their PhD thesis. This includes undertaking their viva and communicating their findings in academic settings and to society in general.
What career opportunities will you have?
PhD holders are highly qualified both scientifically and professionally. In this sense, a PhD specifically equips them to pursue a research career, which may be combined with university teaching and/or participating in R&D&i projects at public or private institutions.
In turn, it also provides a high level of excellence for the jobs pertaining to the disciplines on the programme:
- Cultural management at public and private organisations
- Rescue or planned archaeological work at excavations
- Management positions at archives, libraries and documentation centres
- Specialised work in historical, artistic and cultural heritage protection and management in institutional (i.e. senior civil servants at public administrations) and business (i.e. cataloguing of works and monumental complexes, technical consultancy, heritage interpretation, programme management) spheres
- Management positions at museums, art and culture centres, archives, and image banks and centres
- Specialised technical work in the use of territorial analysis tools for relevant environmental, social and economic problems
- Specialised work in natural resources planning and management in institutional and business spheres.
Attainment of the goals set for PhD degrees in general, and for this programme in particular, involves acquiring a range of core, general and individual skills and abilities.

High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built.
The European Higher Education Area requires that there be a system in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes.
The doctorate programme is subject to constant assessment and improvement processes that guarantee that it maintains a certain level of prestige and renown in Europe. You can see the results of the assessment processes in the results section.
