This PhD programme trains researchers in microbiology and, especially, professionals who are able to:
- Contribute to future scientific progress and extend the threshold of knowledge in the field of microbiology
- Communicate their scientific contributions to microbiology experts, the rest of the academic community and society in general
- Promote aspects and advances in microbiology within an academic, professional or social setting, and specifically those areas that offer progress for society.
What skills will you acquire?
How undertake and develop a research project aimed at resolving a complex problem. This involves a systematic analysis and comprehension of the problem, and designing and implementing an original research project.
Critical analysis and assessment of project results, including a contribution of new complex ideas that push knowledge forward in line with professional codes of ethics and good practice.
To communicate issues linked to current research and knowledge to a wide range of stakeholders, both in academe and in society at large.
To develop skills for multidisciplinary teamwork and to interact with other national or international research groups.
What career opportunities will you have?
The graduate profile is a professional specialist in the fields of environmental microbiology or biomedicine. Graduates are able to manage and develop rigorous projects with a critical approach, provide independent decision-making and performance, and work as part of a team. Career opportunities include:
- Working as researchers at a university, research centre or company R&D department. Initial postdoctoral training will eventually lead to a career as a full-time researcher at a research institute, university or business. Postdoctoral training can win funding through competitive programmes (regional, national, international or from private foundations) or by being hired directly
- Working in the public or private sector as a project lead or manager, or as a research specialist
- Developing your own entrepreneurial project
- Providing consulting services
- Undertaking a career as a secondary school teacher in the public or private sector.

High-quality official study
