It is currently believed that research in Biomedicine should focus primarily on the causes and mechanisms of disease development, so that benefits for the patients can arise from the combination of basic and clinical scientific studies, either in the form of improved diagnosis or in the form of treatments. This, which is known as translational research, is precisely what this doctoral programme aims to promote in the field of public health and high prevalence diseases, and is currently being conducted by the different research groups that make up the University Institute for Research into Health Sciences (IUNICS) and the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa).
