PhD in Applied Economics
What is it?
The UIB's doctoral programme in applied economics offers an advanced degree that attests to the holders' acquisition of competences and abilities related to high-quality scientific research in economics. The programme focuses on preparing researchers with a solid knowledge of economic theories, quantitative methods, and methodological tools that will allow them to carry out original, high-quality research in applied economics.
Concretely, the programme covers the following research areas: the economics of tourism, environmental economics, public economics, and econometrics. All of these are areas in which the Department of Applied Economics at the UIB has professors working. In addition to members of the department, various internationally recognized professors participate in the teaching and oversight of the programme.
What will you learn?
The main objective of the doctoral programme in applied economics is to prepare students to be able to complete original, complex, and innovative research work. The programme provides students with a significant level of discipline, and the studies have practical applications for economic actors, governments, and markets. Research work will take place under the framework of creating a dissertation. Thus, the programme aims to train doctors who will be able to carry out quality research that can be presented at international seminars, published in high-impact journals, and disseminated among the greater scientific community. In addition to being academically relevant, the research work will be significant to society as it will provide public and private decision makers with high levels of knowledge.
What will you be able to do once you finish?
The main goal of the doctoral programme in applied economics is to prepare researchers in economics, and thus, provide them with career opportunities in which they can carry out related tasks in the academic world as professors and researchers in the various research centres and universities in Spain and abroad. Along this line, it is important to note that the programme offers significant support to candidates entering the job market for economists. Beyond their academic careers, doctors in economics are valued in other areas, including consulting, finances, public administrations (European, national, and at the autonomous community level), national and international organizations, public and private organizations (the World Bank, the European Union, the central banks of various countries, etc.), think tanks, R&D departments, and executive boards of large companies.
High-quality official study
Legislation requires that official Spanish degree programmes receive a positive assessment from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA, by its Spanish acronym). This process is known as verification, and it serves to ensure that education programmes are properly designed to provide the competencies and reach the learning goals around which the programmes are built.
The European Higher Education Area requires that there be a system in place to ensure the quality of degree programmes.
