Programme description

Admission criteria

Entry requirements are those stipulated by Royal Decree 1393/2007 of 29th october, in addition to the entry requirements established by the Academic Committee.

Overall Objectives

Programme with a Quality Mention of the Ministry of Education and Science, ref. Nº. MCD2004-00173

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of Microbiology, master the skills and research methods required in Microbiology and be capable of conceiving, designing, implementing and adapting a research process with full academic integrity.
  • Make scientific contributions through research activity to broaden the frontiers of knowledge and publish articles in professional national and international journals.
  • Be capable of critically analysing, evaluating and synthesising new and complex ideas and communicating scientific contributions to other microbiologists, the academic community and society as a whole.
  • Be capable of promoting within professional and academic contexts, the cultural, social technological advances in the knowledge society.

Research lines

  • Infection and immunity, principally the mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity in different types of infections, including pathogen interaction with the host‘s humoral and cellular systems.
  • Resistance to anti-microbial compounds and action mechanisms.
  • Molecular epidemiology. Characterisation of the spread of infections with molecular techniques.
  • Bacterial physiology, primarily the bacterial degradation of hydrocarbons. This encompasses bioremediation studies in situ and biochemical-genetic characterisations of degradative pathways, with a special emphasis on the molecular adaptation mechanisms of bacteria to stress conditions.
  • Bacteria taxonomy and ecological implications.
  • Microbial ecology. Composition of microbial communities and their evolution in time through the use of physiological techniques and molecular biology. Biological indicators of anthropogenic contamination.
  • Molecular methods to detect and identify pathogens and food additives.
  • Bacterial genetics. Application of molecular techniques in characterising bacterial genes.
