Characteristics of practical work and dissertation (at training stage)
Students must successfully complete a practical/placement subject, both in itinerary 2A ( Practicum : Research Work) and itinerary 2B ( Practicum : Practical Training in Food Enterprises). In both subjects students have to carry out a significant piece of training work under the direction of a tutor: a lecturer from the masters with the grade of PhD in the case of Practicum : Research Work, and a tutor from one of the collaborating businesses in Practicum : Practical Training in Food Enterprises, together with a lecturer with the grade of PhD (who will follow the student’s development in the business enterprise). Both subjects carry 9 credits and are tightly connected with the Final Master’s Work (6 credits), in which assessment the student has to present a report of the work carried out in the Practicum , including results and a scientific discussion of them. This report will be defended in public before an examining board approved by the direction of the masters and made up by doctors from the course and, if necessary, external staff from the entrepreneurial field and invited doctors. The examining board will assess the student report and its public defence, which will be considered in the final mark. These subjects act as an introduction to the field of research and development and suppose a link between the training stage and the start of the research stage of the PhD, in which students will carry out the majority of their investigative work leading to the degree of doctor.
Programme antecedents and routes into the course
An important part of these studies is its antecedents , since the PhD programme arises from an adaptation of the PhD programme in Nutrition and Metabolism , coordinated by the UIB, to the new regulations governing postgraduate study established by the Royal Decree 56/2005 and, after, by the Royal Decree 1398/2007. The PhD programme in Nutrition and Metabolism has been extremely successful, something reflected in the number of students taking it each year and the fact that it has held the Spanish Ministry of Education’s quality hallmark since 2003 (when this kind of hallmark started to be granted), and renewed every academic year. This programme already included the participation of the University of Barcelona and the University Rovira i Virgili, which continue to collaborate in the training courses.
The PhD programme consists of 2 phases:
- Educational phase: which consists of the Master in Nutrigenomics and Personalised Nutrition (previously explained). Graduates in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Medicine, Chemistry, Oenology, Pharmacy, Food Science and Technology and Veterinary Medicine may access the Master. Graduates in Nutrition and Dietetics and Nursery (or similar) may also access the Master. Moreover, the Commission of the Studies will consider the admission of other graduate students depending on their specific education as well as the admission of foreign students.
- Research phase: the students that can enter the research phase of this doctorate programme are those who have earned 300 credits of graduate and postgraduate studies (with a minimum of 60 credits in postgraduate studies) (which are accomplished after finishing the master), in the field of experimental sciences related to nutrition, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, medicine, chemistry, oenology, pharmacy, science and technology of food and veterinary medicine and, in general, with the sciences of health and food.
Interest and academic, scientific and professional relevance
Nutritional science in the 21 st century comprises knowledge of the metabolism, nutrient-gene interactions ( nutrigenomics ) and interactions between foods, with the aim of improving nutrition and health and offering an increasingly personalised nutrition . These masters and doctoral studies aim to train specialised professionals in the field, from researchers who will contribute to the discovery of new nutrient properties and food components and ground them correctly, to professionals who will contribute to the design of new foods with positive effects on health within the area of functional nutrition and aspects related to food technology , with knowledge of food security and the laws and regulations involved , right up to the professional who will research in the field of molecular nutrition. We must take into account the fact that society in general poses more and more questions and increasingly demands progress and more qualified professional in this area.
We should also highlight a series of factors that underline the academic, scientific and professional relevance of the course and staff:
- The high number and relevance of publications from the research groups involved in the project
- These studies are supported by specialists from the European Research Network of Excellence in Nutrigenomics, NuGO (The European Nutrigenomics Organization, www.nugo.org ), unique in the field, awarded the hallmark of “excellent research network” by the European Commission and comprising members producing high-quality research. The UIB research group headed by Dr Andreu Palou which coordinates these studies is a member of this network. The existence of such a group at a European level highlights international interest created by matters in nutrition and nutrigenomics, a fundamental area of the masters and doctorate.
- Other markers of the academic, scientific and professional relevance of these studies and the staff are the important research projects which the award’s director has directed and carried out with his research group, as well as its recognition as a CIBER (Networked Centres for Biomedical Research) group (CB 06/03/0060, with Dr Andreu Palou as group director) within the CIBER Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition . It should be pointed out that in the National Plan of Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation ( I+D+i , R&D&I) for 2004-207, passed by the Spanish Cabinet 7 th November 2003, and in the Ingenio 2010 programme, which constitutes a priority instrument in public R&D policies, there is a stated need to promote quality research in biomedicine and health sciences in the Spanish national health service, by means of development and promotion of stable structures for cooperative networked research. To achieve this aim, in 2006 existing structures were consolidated and promoted and research groups were incorporated into CIBER, a group of research groups with legal standing and organised in areas of interest to the health service.
- Furthermore, the group have carried and are carrying out a great number of research projects both nationally and internationally, such as AGL2006-04887/ALI " Nutrigenómica funcional en la obesidad. Efecto de los componentes de la leche materna y nutrientes específicos durante el desarrollo postnatal temprano sobre la resistencia a la obesidad y sus complicaciones metabólicas en la edad adulta ", and " Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants ( IDEFICS ) " (funded by the 4 th EU Framework Programme), amongst others.
- The researchers involved in the masters and doctorate also have a wide experience in research projects carried out in conjunction with universities abroad, which has built up the demand for cooperation and networks of scientific cooperation (with projects such as "Bioactive food components, mitochondrial function and health, COST FA0602 ", "Red temática de investigación cooperativa G03/028 ", "Dietary lipids as risk factors in development ( DLARFID ). Mechanistic issues. QLRT2001001832000/C324/11", "Body weight control and energy expenditure. Funtional food and nutrition technology, COST action 918 ", "Metabolic integration and energy control. Regulation of energy balance from brown adipocytes to whole animals, Human Capital and Mobility-Network , ERBCHRXCT940490", and others). This has resulted in articles in high-quality journals, and the exchange of early-career and well-established researchers.
- The researchers involved in these course also have extensive of contact with business, which is shown by numerous contracts with the business sector (often renewed on a year-by-year basis) that the group has held over the past few years with such important companies as Flora-Unilever , Mercadona , Cognis , Corporación Alimentaria Peñasanta SA (Central Lechera Asturiana) , Puleva Biotech, Natraceutical and Casa Tarradellas , and others. This collaboration has had a positive affect on the postgraduate programmes and led to placement possibilities with companies for students on the courses.
- The presence of foundations and entities of the utmost prestige in Europe such as ILSI (International Life Sciences Institute, a foundation comprising world-leading food companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Danone) and FIAB (Spanish Federation of Food Companies). Furthermore, it is worth mentioning the involvement of official entities such as: AESAN (Spanish Food Security and Nutrition Agency), whose scientific committee is headed by Andreu Palou, and the SCF (Scientific Committee on Food) between 1997 and 2002, continued as the scientific nutrition panel (dietetic products, nutrition and allergies) of EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), in which Prof. Palou has been vice-president. Both the AESA and the EFSA are the principal official assessment organs for governments in matters of food safety in Spain and the EU respectively. Another example of the presence of the course’s staff in the scientific field is the fact that Prof. Palou’s group formed part of the organising committee of the 3rd International Conference on Nutrigenomics , which, under the title of "From Nutrigenomics to Personalised Nutrition" , was held in Palma in November 2005.

Functional Foods: Food Safety and Food Quality
The postgraduate studies in Nutrigenomics and Personalised Nutrition offer specialised training , directed towards the training of professional in the field of molecular nutrition with special emphasis placed on new technologies such as transcriptomics , epigenomics , proteomics , metabolomics and systems biology , since training in these areas is fundamental for new professionals in nutrition, who also need and increasing awareness of matters of food safety and quality and functional foods. This need arises from society’s increasing interest in improving quality of life through correct and personalised nutrition and diet, based on new knowledge of gene-nutrient interaction and the application of new diagnostic tools, based on early symptoms of disease. On the other hand, it is becoming clearer that as well as the application of nutritional concepts for the general population, the application of personalised nutrition is becoming more and more relevant, allowing researchers to go into more depth into nutritional and metabolic characteristics of small groups and even individuals
