Students with foreign degrees
This section is aimed at students with foreign degrees who would like to take official postgraduate studies (Master's or Doctorate) at the UIB. Such students are not required to have their foreign degrees officially recognised by the Spanish education authorities. This admission shall not, in any case, involve the recognition of the prior degree possessed by the interested party or its recognition for any other purposes than access to Doctorate studies. Students with foreign degrees recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education will follow the pre-registration process undertaken by students with Spanish degrees.
If you are interested in having your foreign degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) officially recognised by the Spanish education authorities, please contact the Spanish Ministry of Education.
If you are interested in having your foreign PhD officially recognised in Spain, please visit the website of Doctoral School of the UIB - section "Declaración de equivalencia".
Students who would like to take an official postgraduate programme at the UIB must pre-register. The pre-registration procedure involves students applying for a place on one or several UIB postgraduate programmes and comprises the following stages:

2. Entry: Assessment and Resolution
The Doctoral School of the University of the Balearic Islands (EDUIB) and the Centre for Postgraduate Studies (CEP) will review and verify applicants fulfil the entry requirements, i.e. their qualification(s) enable admission to official UIB postgraduate programmes. Candidates will be sent an e-mail notification containing the relevant decision. The following entry requirements shall be taken into account:
Entry Requirements for Master’s Programmes
- An official university degree issued within the EHEA enabling admission to master’s programmes in the issuing country
- Graduates from non-EHEA education systems may be admitted to official master's programmes without having to validate their qualifications. In this instance, the UIB will verify the qualifications in question have an equivalent level of training to the corresponding official Spanish university degree programmes and enable admission to postgraduate programmes in the issuing country. This entry method in no way represents accreditation for applicants' qualifications or their recognition for any purposes other than entry to master's programmes.
Entry Requirements for PhD Programmes
- An official university degree issued within the EHEA enabling admission to master’s programmes and having completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits, where at least 60 are from a master’s degree.
- Graduates from non-EHEA education systems may be admitted to PhD programmes without having to validate their qualifications. In this instance, the UIB will verify the qualifications in question have an equivalent level of training to the corresponding official Spanish university degree programmes and enable admission to PhD programmes in the issuing country. This entry method in no way represents accreditation for applicants' qualifications or their recognition for any purposes other than entry to PhD programmes.
Where an entry decision is favourable, the CEP and/or EDUIB will forward the pre-registration application to the relevant body for the programme.
Where entry is denied, the procedure comes to an end and students have the right to lodge any relevant appeals.
3. Admission: Assessment and Resolution
Where students' qualifications are deemed acceptable, their application will be forwarded to the relevant academic committee for the programme. This body will assess and decide on admissions. Applicants will receive a notification containing the admission decision and the relevant enrolment dates.
Admitted students requiring an official letter of admission issued by the UIB in order to apply for a student visa at the Spanish embassy or consulate in their home country, or for any other procedure linked to studying at the UIB, may request it at the following e-mail addresses: <postgrau@uib.es>. They must state which information must be included in the letter.
If the admission resolution is negative, the procedure comes to an end and students have the right to file the relevant appeals.
Admission Requirements
Please see the information for each master's or PhD programme in the relevant tab: 'Factsheet' or 'Entry and Admission.'
4. Enrolment
Once students are admitted to the programme, there is a set enrolment deadline for them to select subjects on their master's programmes or register for academic supervision on their PhD programme. In both instances, enrolment fees apply.
Admitted PhD students will receive an e-mail from the EDUIB containing their enrolment instructions and deadline.
Admitted master’s students must enrol online via UIBdigital. Students need to enter their username (3 letters and 3 numbers) and the password they used for pre-registration to access their personal account.
Once in UIBdigital, they need to follow the steps shown on screen, and select the subjects where they wish to enrol and their payment method.
Important Points to Bear in Mind during the Enrolment Procedure
- Students need to enrol for the subjects they will be taking throughout the academic year (first and second semester)
- Students who are starting a master's programme must enrol for a minimum 30 ECTS, unless they have been granted a specific enrolment status. In this instance, they enrol for at least 24 credits on programmes with limited spots or 12 credits on programmes with unlimited spots (Decree 44/2016)
- Students need to pay their tuition fees within the set deadline. Failure to do so means both the tuition fees and late payment surcharges will remain outstanding
- Students may also query other procedures linked to enrolment (amendments, cancellation, addition of courses, etc.) at this link.
Available Payment Methods
- Cash invoice or international transfer. In this instance, students may print out the enrolment invoice and, if they are in Spain, head to any of the Spanish bank branches listed on the invoice to pay their fees.
Where they are overseas, they can make an international transfer. In this instance, once enrolment is finalised, students need to send an e-mail to the CEP (postgrauuib.es) so that it may send out the international enrolment invoice containing the necessary information to make the transfer. Once the transfer is completed, students need to send their payment receipt to the same e-mail address. Any applicable banking fees shall be paid by students
- Bank card. If an error occurs when making payment, students need to contact their card issuer since there may be restrictions blocking the payment transaction
- Direct debit. Here, students need to provide their Spanish bank account number.
This option enables students to split the total fee amount into several payments, in accordance with what is set out in Decree 44/2016 governing Public Fees for Academic and Administrative Services on Official Programmes at the University of the Balearic Islands.
